Think about the last time you needed a recommendation. Did you type a few words into a traditional search box, or did you ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, or one of Google’s AI-powered search features?
More people now start by asking a complete question. Instead of showing only a page of links, an AI-powered search tool may assemble an answer and include a few websites as supporting sources.
When an AI-powered search tool goes looking for an answer, can it find and understand your website?
There is no secret switch that makes an AI assistant recommend your business. There is no special sentence you can add that guarantees a citation. Google says its regular search foundations still apply to its AI features—and meeting those requirements does not guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed, or shown.
But an AI-powered search tool still has to do four basic things before it can use your information: discover the page, open it, find the useful part, and decide whether that information is suitable to support an answer.
The following five foundations make each of those steps easier.
1. Let Search and AI Tools Reach Your Website
AI-powered search needs permission to visit your public pages.
Websites usually contain a small rules file called robots.txt. Think of it as a sign at the entrance that tells automated visitors where they may and may not go. It can welcome them into public pages while keeping them out of customer accounts, test pages, and administration screens.
Problems begin when that sign accidentally says, “Keep out,” to everyone.
This can happen when a test setting reaches the live website or a security service blocks legitimate search tools along with unwanted traffic. The website may look normal to you while an automated visitor receives an empty page or an access-denied message.
It is also important to know that being included in AI-powered search and being used to train a future AI model are not always the same permission.
For example, OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, which helps content appear in ChatGPT search, from GPTBot, which website owners can block if they do not want their pages used to help train future AI models. Perplexity makes a similar distinction: PerplexityBot helps its search product find and link to websites and is not used to train its large AI models.
You do not need to welcome every automated system. You do need to choose intentionally. Blocking everything may also remove your content from the AI search experiences where you hoped to be found.
What to ask: Are Google, Bing, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and the other services we care about able to access our public pages—and are private areas still protected?
2. Make Your Important Information Easy to Open and Find
Access is only the first step. The page must also be readable.
Some websites deliver the main words, headings, and links with the page. Others deliver an almost empty shell and depend on JavaScript—the code that builds many interactive parts of a website—to assemble everything afterward. Automated systems do not all handle that equally well.
Google can process JavaScript, but it still recommends sending the important content with the page because that is faster for people and automated tools—and not every bot can run JavaScript. Your most important information should not require a machine to solve a puzzle before it can read the page.
Your pages also need clear paths between them. A normal link to “Website audit services” is easy to follow. A button that only works after a complicated animation or invisible script may not be.
Every important page should have:
- one stable web address;
- a clear page title;
- ordinary links from other relevant pages;
- the main information available as soon as the page loads; and
- a place in the website’s sitemap, which is simply a list of pages created for search tools.
When several addresses show the same information, the website should identify the official one. That prevents search systems from treating copies as separate, competing pages.
Speed and reliability matter too. A slow or broken page frustrates customers and is harder for an automated tool to retrieve consistently.
What to ask: If someone opens our page without clicking, scrolling, or dismissing a pop-up, are the important words already there? Can every important page be reached through a normal link and found in our sitemap?
3. Give Clear Answers to Real Questions
An AI-powered search tool may not need your entire website. It may be looking for one passage that answers one part of a person’s question.
That makes clear writing unusually valuable.
Use headings that tell readers what a section is about. Put the main answer near the beginning. Keep each section focused on one idea. Then support the answer with the details that make it useful: who it applies to, when it was last checked, what exceptions matter, and where the information came from.
Consider the difference between these two answers:
Vague: We provide innovative website solutions designed to optimize your digital presence and help your organization succeed.
Direct: We audit small-business websites for problems that can prevent customers and search tools from finding important pages. The audit covers mobile usability, page speed, search visibility, and AI-search access.
The second version gives a person—and a machine—something concrete to understand. It names the service, the audience, the problem, and the scope.
Useful details beat confident-sounding filler. Give factual claims meaning with a date, location, conditions, or source. Describe firsthand experience honestly. Use tables for real comparisons, not decoration.
This does not mean cutting every page into tiny pieces or writing awkwardly for a machine. Google specifically says there is no required “AI chunk size” and no ideal page length. Its advice is to make the page for the audience. Clear sections help because they help people—not because you are trying to outsmart a hidden formula.
What to ask: Does each important page answer a real customer question clearly near the top, or does the reader have to work through several paragraphs of general marketing language first?
4. Make It Clear Who Is Speaking—and Why They Can Be Trusted
Imagine receiving two pieces of advice. One comes from a named person who explains their experience and links to the evidence behind the recommendation. The other comes from “The Editorial Team,” with no biography, date, examples, or sources.
Which one would you trust?
Search and AI systems face a similar problem. Relevance matters, but so does provenance—a technical word that simply means where the information came from.
A trustworthy website makes basic questions easy to answer: Who wrote this? What relevant experience do they have? Who publishes it? When was it meaningfully updated? What evidence supports its important claims?
This is why real bylines, useful author profiles, and a clear About page matter. Google’s people-first content guidance encourages accurate authorship information, relevant background about authors, clear sourcing, and evidence of firsthand expertise.
Your business name, location, services, and contact details should also agree across your website and reputable outside profiles. Conflicting names, addresses, or service areas force people and automated systems to guess which version is correct.
Adding an author box does not automatically make weak information trustworthy. Trust comes from doing useful work, describing it honestly, citing solid sources, correcting mistakes, and keeping important information current. The author box simply makes that work easier to attribute.
What to ask: Can a first-time visitor quickly identify who created the information, why that person is qualified to discuss it, and what evidence supports the important claims?
5. Label Important Facts So Machines Understand Them
The visible words on the page are the main event. But a website can also include a set of standardized labels that helps search systems identify what those words mean.
This is called structured data. Think about moving boxes: labels such as “Kitchen,” “Books,” or “Fragile” make the contents easier to understand without opening every box. Structured data adds similar labels to a webpage.
Those labels can say:
- this is the article’s title;
- this person is the author;
- this organization is the publisher;
- this is a business address;
- this number is a product price; or
- this date is when an event begins.
Schema.org provides the shared vocabulary behind many of these labels. Google explains that structured data gives it explicit clues about a page’s meaning and may make the page eligible for richer search displays.
There are two important limits. Structured data is not a special ticket into AI answers; Google says it is not required for its generative AI search features. The labels must also match what visitors can see. A website should not claim a hidden price, a nonexistent review, or an imaginary expert.
This work happens behind the scenes. A web professional can choose the right labels, match them to the page, and test them.
What to ask: Does our website accurately identify its organization, authors, articles, services, products, locations, and other important information in a format search systems can understand?
What About llms.txt?
You may have heard that every website now needs an llms.txt file. It is an emerging proposal for giving AI tools a short, machine-friendly guide to a website and its most useful pages.
It may become a convenient addition for tools that choose to use it, especially on large documentation websites. It is not a replacement for public webpages, access rules, sitemaps, clear content, or structured data.
Most importantly, it is not a universal requirement for appearing in AI-powered search. Google says its search systems ignore llms.txt and that adding one neither helps nor hurts Google visibility. Other systems may choose to use it, but you should not assume they do unless their current documentation says so.
Treat it as an optional experiment, not a magic file and not the first thing to fix.
A Five-Question Website Check
You can reduce this entire article to five practical questions:
- Can the search and AI services we care about access our public pages?
- Is our important information visible immediately and connected by ordinary links?
- Do our pages answer real questions clearly and specifically?
- Can readers verify who created the information and where important claims came from?
- Does the website accurately label its authors, organization, articles, services, products, or other key information?
Answering “yes” to all five does not guarantee that an AI assistant will cite or recommend your website. It does mean you have removed several common barriers that could prevent your information from being considered at all.
That is the real goal: not to trick an AI system, but to make your website easier for people and machines to access, understand, and trust.
You Shouldn’t Have to Figure This Out Alone
Most business owners should not have to inspect access rules, raw page responses, sitemaps, page labels, and security settings themselves. You should be able to ask a straightforward question—“Can customers and AI-powered search tools find and understand my website?”—and receive a straightforward answer.
